As we enter into fall my mind turns to a bourbon drink. A wonderful bourbon drink for the fall season is the Boulevardier which is a fancy name for a drink that is a Negroni with Bourbon instead of Gin. Born in the 1920’s and attributed to Erskine Gwynne this concoction is the perfect nighttime cocktail that exudes a balanced combination of sweetness, bitterness and spicy notes that provides a nice warmth as the temperatures at night start to fall.
Ingredients:
- Bourbon or Rye (e.g., Woodford Reserve Bourbon)
- Campari
- Sweet Vermouth (Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth)
- Orange (citrus oils and garnish)
Tools:
- Oxo two-sided shot glass/jigger
- Large Ice Cube Form
- Double Rocks Glass (or chilled Coupe Glass)
- Oxo Cocktail strainer
- Mixing Glass
- Mixing spoon
Directions:
- Make sure you have a large ice cube (square or round) available for cocktail.
- Place ice cube into double rocks glass.
- Fill mixing glass with ice and then add ingredients for one cocktail.
- Woodford Reserve Bourbon – 1.5 oz
- Campari – 1 oz
- Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth – 1 oz
- Stir cocktail until very cold (30 seconds minimum)
- Strain drink using oxo cocktail strainer (liquid only) into double rocks glass that has a single large ice cube (round or square)
- Take a slice of orange peel and squeeze several times into the top of glass (orange side facing the drink) to release the citrus oils. This minor act makes a world of difference to the character and flavor of the cocktail. Then garnish by dropping the squeezed orange peel into the cocktail (or make a fancier version with an orange peel)
